Today's no melt suets formulas make it an excellent bird feeding option all year round. It is beneficial for both migratory and non-migratory birds. Although migrating birds will eventually reach their winter feeding locations where food is abundant, the journey often requires stops for food and rest. Suet contains fats and are a high energy food source for wild birds. Winter months have traditionally been thought of as the time to put suet out but the newer formulations allow for its use all year round. They can be purchased as suet cakes, suet doughs, suet nuggets and balls. As soon as the wild bird discover a site that offers suet, they will return again and again to feed. Nesting birds need suet during breeding times for extra energy while raising their broods. Many suets are formulated to attract a variety of songbirds. Some are simple and contain mixed seed and cornmeal mixtures while other recipes are mixed with peanut butter, nuts, fruits, insects and high energy black oil sunflower that attract a wide variety of bird species. Others contain calcium supplements that is particularly beneficial during egg formation.
