Field Guides and Bird Identification
In addition to a good pair of binoculars, a field guide is an essential tool for bird watching. There are so many birds with similar characteristics that the correct identification may be hard to determine without the help of a field guide. This is especially true when you first start birding. There are a variety of excellent field guides available. While there are birding guides that are generic, many target a specific geographic region which can be very helpful to pinpoint the bird species most prevalent within a specific part of a country. A good field guide will have detailed color pictures, charts showing seasonal availability, species lists and descriptions of outstanding characteristics one would look for at first glance to initially classify the bird. The chart at the right shows some of the bird morphology to focus on when you first encounter a new bird species. Characteristics such as its size, coloration, bill shape and gross markings such as crests, eye stripes, breast barring, tail shape and length are just a few of the parts you may be able to see right away. Smaller details such as eye rings, eye color, leg color, wing details and others will often require the help of field guides and binoculars. As you become more experienced, you will find that you may already be able to classify the bird within a family of birds and then learn to focus quickly on more minor details as you realize you have only a short time to observe the bird.
